Again, this book was written by someone who accidentally "died" and later committed suicide. I found his narrative very honest and interesting. I thought he had a very down to earth writing style and it was a fast, satisfying read for me. It certainly touched on the difference between my perception of heaven and hell.

MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW, June 30, 2004
Reviewer: Shirley Priscilla Johnson (see more about me) from MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW

My Last Breath is an intense autobiography by author Matthew D. Dovel.
The author shares with the reader two incidents where he came to the door of
eternity and returned to tell about it. One happened when he was a young
boy, meeting and enjoying the presence of a loving Savior.
The second was at his own hands, and what he experienced at that time was
much more detailed and not as pleasant. I believe this had a great impact
on the rest of his life.

I have read many near death experience books, and have found the experiences
of what they see and feel can vary greatly, but I always find them
intriguing. This work was no different.
I would have liked to have had a few more details in some areas, but what
he gave was enough to keep my interest, and perhaps look forward to another
book.
I did like the way the author encourages others to think about their life
on earth, giving some important points to follow and warnings to heed. He
also shares with the reader the change in his life since these happens,
which include visions, predictions and healings. Interesting!

If you are curious about the afterlife you will enjoy this book.
All in all an interesting and enlighten read.

Dear Matthew:

I just finished reading your book "My Last Breath" and I felt very compelled to write to you.  Your story is very motivational and very informative.  I have never had a death experience, but I have recently lost my father whom I was extremely close to.  I have had such a hard time with his death that I have been drinking excessively.  I have been contemplating heaven/hell ever since he has passed about a year and a half ago.  Your book not only gave me some of the answers about those issues that I have been searching for, but also gave me motivation to not drown my problems with alcohol.

I want to thank you so much for sharing your experiences.  I am sure that I am not the only one who you have helped in an enormous way!!!!

Sincerely, Cathy Richard

Sincerity of Message, Clumsy in the Telling.
Grady Harp, Amazon book reviewer Ranked #12, May 15, 2005

MY LAST BREATH is a fine little promotional book about the importance of Suicide Prevention. It is also an attempt to explore the 'near death episode' that peppers more and more self-help books. Only in this memoir author Matthew D. Dovel recounts not one but two such episodes - the first as a drowning accident and the other as an unsuccessful, sloppy suicide attempt. The facts are interesting if not original, but it is in the telling that his brief book falls short.

First, in credibility: before the drowning episode Dovel had little affiliation with religion except for a couple of church attendances, so it seems odd that his vision while 'dead' should so quickly identify a readily recognizable God and Jesus and all the intricacies of Christianity. Sounds a bit like recreating a scene retrospectively. The second near death episode is one of the more bizarre recountings of the interactions of cocaine, alcohol and over-the-counter sleep meds. If a mind is as altered as was the mind of Dovel during this episode of 'waking up', how would he be able to later transfer the process to the written word with such scientific exactitude?

But the purpose of this book is not literary but rather as a platform for the author's commitment to Suicide Prevention Programs and for that reason it is worth perusing. This information doubtless comes across better over the microphone than on the written page where it all reads in a rather clumsy fashion.

Everything a good book should have!
Robin G., book lover and writer., August 26, 2004,

I purchased My Last Breath from Barnes and Noble and read and finished it in one night and next morning. It was a little of everything, scary, funny, real life and heart warming. Loved the book!

"Well Worth Reading"
March 25, 2004, A reader from Farmington Hills, MI

I liked "My Last Breath" because it describes the aftereffects of the near death experience extremely well. The author focuses on how the experiences have affected and still do affect his life. Having experienced the NDE myself, I do understand the issues Mr. Dovel faces.
This book presents valuable insights anyone can use to improve their daily life. I personally didn't care for the religious references in this book, but in no way does this affect my rating. To me, the insights presented are more important than my opinions on religion. My Last Breath is well worth reading and by all means deserves five stars!

"Wow"
March 24, 2004, Marlene D., Book reader

What a life Matthew led. He's lucky to be alive to tell his story. It took a lot of boldness on Matthew's part to be willing to put what happened to him in a book and share it. A definite must read.

"Very interesting and intense! Profound"!
March 11, 2004, Reviewer: Kevin Williams (see more about me) from Rancho Cordova, CA United States

The book "My Last Breath" by Matthew D. Dovel is a very interesting and intense story of someone who had two near-death experiences which resulted in him first going to heaven and then hell the other. This makes Dovel's near-death experiences unique in that one was heavenly and the other was hellish. Most NDE's involving a person experiencing both heaven and hell are within the same NDE. It is refreshing to read the comparison between the two destinations from someone who experienced both but at separate times. "My Last Breath" is easy to read and thought-provoking at the same time. As it is with many NDEs, many of his profound insights requires time to fully digest as you reflect more and more on his wonderful message. Undoubtedly, such insights require the rest of your life to fully appreciate. In essence, "My Last Breath" is not only a fascinating read, it is also a guide on how spirituality can be applied in everyday life. - Kevin Williams, "Near-Death Experiences and the Afterlife" http://www.near-death.com

I just finished reading "My Last Breath" yesterday. I really enjoyed it, and couldn't put it down. It had great flow and kept my interest. Most writers, don't have flow and can't keep my interest. You're either very blessed in that department or you worked very hard on revisions, or both!

I found your experiences, to be very profound. One of the most intriguing things was your visit to Hell and description of it. I have never heard of anyone ever visiting, coming back, much less writing about it. I too believe that torture of ones soul has got to be the most painful of all. I have great empathy, and could not imagine myself experiencing what you have.

Another thing that stands out in my mind is your view that we're all here to help other people and we never know who it is. I truly believe that we have to be kind to others, because you never know who you might impact, even with a word of kindness. I often think about judgment day and standing before the Lord. What am I going to tell him?

One line in particular that was in your book, reinforced my thoughts on a personal matter. I am turning 40 this year and am thinking of doing something very important and life changing, if God is willing. Your line, and I quote said," Live your dreams no matter how old you are and never look back saying that I wish I had done that."

Never give up writing, you'll only get better! I look forward to another book, so get busy asking the Lord what it should be, because your books will always be on my shelf next to Stephen King. (What can I say, it was his stories that got me started reading,)

"My Last Breath" was truly one of the most inspirational books I have ever read. It definitely makes me think about my actions both positive and negative towards others. After reading the book, I am comforted about my feelings towards death. It was a very interesting book that examines both heaven and hell and helps answer the question, "What happens after you die".
