5 steps to being
 happier, healthier and more successful.
By Matthew Dovel

**  If you are in this age group you have the highest suicide rate of all age groups.

1. Food and your diet -
  • By now you should know that eating properly is vital for having the quality of life that has dignity.   If you don’t think diet is important start going to the retirement homes and see how low the quality of life can be.
  • There is a direct relationship between the suicide rate and the dramatic increase and the introduction of processed food & the fast food industry into our society.
  • Getting back to the basics of a balance diet will help with slowing the ageing process, keeping bones strong and providing more energy.   Grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy and meats.

2. Have trusted friend in your life

  • Isolation is one of the worst things for depressed.  Depression is a normal emotion that follows loss, such as: Loss of life partner, death of a pet, retiring, or your best friend dies.
  • Talk to your friends about how you are feeling.  Get out and be social even though you don’t want to.  Don’t become a drug addict, or alcoholic.  This will just increase any problems that you already have. Real friends will understand, stay close, and in contact with you each day until you feel better.
3. Goals & Dreams
  • Write a list of your wildest goals, dreams and aspirations.   Just because you are old doesn’t mean that you should not have dreams.  Keep this list where you can see it every day.  Do something everyday that will take you one step closer to achieving these goals.
  • You should always have a goal list for building a healthy self-esteem.
  • A goal list should be realistic and obtainable, or else it will tear down your self-esteem rather than build it up.
  • On your goal list you should have a short-term goal, medium goal and long-range goal.  At any given time you should always have three to ten goals that you are working on.
4. Feelings
  • A feeling never killed anyone.   Sure they hurt, but tomorrow it will hurt a little less and the day after that it will hurt even less.   The closer you are to a painful emotion the more it will hurt.
  • Start making it a habit to write down how you are feeling when it is painful and the next time you feel the same pull out your journal and you will remember how you got through the pain the last time.  Then just do the same thing this time.
5. Television, computers & the great outdoors
  • Television is one of the most wonderful inventions of our time.  We can see places that we will never go on a TV.  They make us laugh; cry, feel sad and they entertain us when we are bored.  But, they do not replace exercise and cognitive interaction.
  • Our bodies need sunlight and fresh air in order to work properly.   You have worked your whole life to take time to see and enjoy it.  So, what are you waiting for?  The world is a wonderful place so get out there and explore the world you live in and smell the fresh air.

Make a list of 45 things that make life worth living for.  Read it when ever you feel down and it will lift you up!
Examples: 1. A first kiss.  2. Ice cream.  3. A sunset.  4. A warm towel on a cold morning after a hot shower.
